Morphological Awareness and Its Influence on Successful Language Literacy

This paper examines the importance of morphological awareness in achieving successful language literacy. Language learning requires significant commitment not only from students but also from teachers. In the context of foreign language teaching, teachers must be aware that grammar disciplines and the rules governing them play a crucial role in language literacy. Without rules, effective communication is not possible, which represents the essence of foreign language learning.

Recent research increasingly highlights morphology as a key linguistic discipline contributing to language literacy. Word-formation rules, morphological processes, and other morphological principles are essential for successful foreign language acquisition. Morphological awareness refers to learners’ understanding of the structure of words and the rules that govern their formation and use.

This paper compares relevant theoretical insights with empirical research conducted among students of English language and literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Mostar. The research is particularly significant as it examines students’ perceptions and attitudes as future English language teachers. The findings indicate that students recognize the importance of morphological awareness for achieving language literacy. Additionally, the results demonstrate that students possess a solid level of knowledge in this area and express a willingness to adapt their learning strategies when necessary in order to achieve better academic and professional outcomes.
