SUMMARY
Student absenteeism in high schools has become an increasingly common issue. Although regular attendance is one of the fundamental responsibilities of every student, schools continue to face a high number of absences each year, particularly unexcused absences. Experiences from educational practice suggest that this problem is complex and influenced by numerous factors.
The aim of this study was to identify the most common reasons why students do not attend Physical Education classes. Data were collected from previous research and analyzed using the target analysis method. The study examined the issue from several perspectives, including the viewpoints of the students themselves.
The results confirmed that at least three major groups of factors significantly influence student absenteeism: family-related factors, student-related factors, and school-related factors. The findings suggest that absenteeism can be reduced by improving social conditions within families, strengthening students’ self-awareness and responsibility, and enhancing working conditions and the overall school environment.
The authors recommend conducting similar research in primary schools, even though the level of absenteeism is generally lower there. They conclude that a better understanding of the causes of absenteeism may contribute to improving the overall educational system in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
